Chair exercises – New

Why does adapted movement matter?

Guidelines from EULAR, the European League of Associations of Rheumatology, emphasise that regular exercise should be part of the general treatment for people with arthritis. Exercise can have positive effects on strength, endurance, mobility, pain, function and general well-being.

EULAR also emphasises that exercise should be adapted to each individual's health, ability, interests and circumstances. This is precisely the aim of the Arthritis Society's courses: to provide a safe way to get into exercise that takes the arthritis and your current fitness level into account.

You don't need to be in good shape before you start. The course is a way to get started – slowly, safely and in good company.

Chair exercises

Chair-based exercise is particularly suitable for those who find it difficult to stand for long periods, are unsteady on their feet, or need to be able to rest while they move. The exercises are mostly performed sitting down or with the support of a chair. The sessions are suitable for people of all ages.

Works with, among other things:

  • flexibility and mobility
  • strength and stability
  • balance and posture
  • mild endurance exercises
  • a safe exercise that can be adapted to your fitness level

Although it may be done on a chair, chair exercise can be very good and effective training. It can be particularly suitable for those who have previously found it difficult to find a suitable form of exercise, or who do not feel confident in joining regular exercise classes.
