The Arthritis Society's Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy at the Arthritis Association of Iceland is an important part of the Society's support for people with rheumatic diseases. The Arthritis Society's occupational therapists are specialist professionals with knowledge of arthritis and its impact on daily life. The service is individualised and based on the specific needs of each person.

 The aim is to improve the daily lives of individuals with arthritis by finding solutions that enable them to carry out activities of daily living with as little discomfort and pain as possible.

What does occupational therapy with the Arthritis Association involve?

  • Assessment of capability and circumstances individual with regard to pain, mobility and endurance.
  • Assistance with aids for daily living, e.g. splints, openers, crutches, braces, etc.
  • Adaptation of home and work conditions to relieve pressure and reduce pain.
  • Education and training in methods for protecting joints and distributing stress (joint bearing).
  • Energy-saving methods with daily tasks.
  • Advice on posture and movement patterns to reduce pain and stress.

  • The service is usually provided at the Rheumatism Association's premises:
     Brekkuhús 1, 112 Reykjavík

Who can use the service?

  • All people with rheumatic diseases who are members of the Arthritis Society of Iceland.
  • To use the services of an occupational therapist, a referral from a doctor is required, and the service is subsidised by Sjúkratryggingar Íslands.
