The Arthritis Society's Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy provided by the Arthritis Association of Iceland is an important part of supporting people with arthritis to maintain mobility, reduce pain and improve quality of life. The society's physiotherapy service is based at the Arthritis Society's premises at Brekkuhús 1, 112 Reykjavík.

What does physiotherapy for rheumatism patients involve?

  • Exercise programmes which are tailored to rheumatic diseases, such as arthritis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and others.
  • Strengthening and stretching exercises to maintain mobility and muscle strength.
  • Pain treatment, e.g. with stretches, relaxation or light exercises.
  • Specialised physiotherapy
  • Education on body mechanics and methods to reduce strain on the joints.
  • Specialised group courses, e.g. water aerobics or light cardio.

Who can take part?

  • To see a physiotherapist, you need a referral from a doctor. The treatment is subsidised by the National Health Service.
