We present the book 'Maria and Mum's Secret' by Hrönn Stefánsdóttir, chairperson of the Arthritis Society of Iceland. The book is written to raise awareness of arthritis and to help parents with arthritis explain complex illnesses in a simple and constructive way to their children.
The author reads from the book and gives a short talk about the far-reaching impact of arthritis on the whole family, and the ways in which families can be supported to make life easier.
Text on the back of the book:
Maria is a cheerful nine-year-old girl who loves to play and invent adventures. But sometimes her mum needs to rest more than other mums. Sometimes she is strong like a hero, but on other days she gets tired and needs to take a break. It can be difficult to understand why Mum can't always take part in everything. In the story, María discovers how love, warmth and togetherness can make the family stronger – even when illness is a part of life. The book shows children and parents that it's okay to talk together, ask questions and find new ways to have good times together. The story is written to explain complex illnesses in a simple and constructive way for children.
